CCH Software Development has announced the local availability of Rational Suite V2001, the most important release since the Rational Suite family of products was introduced in 1998. The new version includes four new products and enhancements to the existing 12 products in the Rational Suite family, and is targeted at further increasing speed and quality for software development teams, says Themi Themistocleous, director at CCH Software Development, sole local distributor for Rational.
To launch the new suite in South Africa CCH Software Development is running a free half-day conference on Wednesday 31 January at the BIFSA Conference centre from 9am to noon.
"Application development in e-business is characterised by a paradox," says Themistocleous: that of simultaeously increasing both development speed and quality. The latest version of Rational Suite is designed to help developers deal with and manage this paradox."
The four new products are Rational ClearCase LT, Rational QualityArchitect, Rational TestManager and the Rational Unified Process with Content for the Microsoft Web Solution Platform.
The new release provides benefits to every member of a software team - analysts, designers, developers, and testers, says Themistocleous. It is Rational`s fifth synchronised product release in less than two years, in which 16 integrated products are pre-tested and released on a single set of CDs with a common installation procedure.
The new release delivers on four major company initiatives that increase the speed and quality of software development - Unified Change Management (UCM), Quality-by-Design, Rational Suite Extensibility (RSE) and e-development Accelerators.
Rational ClearCase LT is the newest member of Rational`s software configuration management (SCM) product family and is designed to deliver Rational`s change management solution to small development teams. It allows developers to take full advantage of Unified Change Management (UCM) - Rational`s out-of-the-box process for managing change and controlling workflow based on proven best practices.
Rational QualityArchitect is the first tool to automate J2EE and COM component testing from UML (Unified Modelling Language) visual models. It automates attention to quality early in the development lifecycle. It automatically generates code from UML models to test individual software components before the rest of the system has been built.
Rational TestManager is an open and extensible test management system, which unifies all testing-related tools, artefacts, scripts, and data. It delivers integrated management of test activities and artefacts across the entire software development lifecycle to every member of a software team. Using this tool users define quality goals, create and manage test plans, schedule and execute tests, analyse test results and communicate software quality status.
Additionally, Rational has worked with Microsoft and Applied Information Services (AIS) to develop the Rational Unified Process with Content for the Microsoft Web Solution Platform. It provides software process guidelines, templates and examples for customers building software on the Microsoft Web Solution platform, enabling customers to leverage the Web using Rational and Microsoft technologies.
"Ever faster development and non-negotiable quality are mandatory in today`s e-business world," adds Themistocleous. "Low-quality products disappoint customers, and speed-to-market is vital in the Internet age.
Meeting these contradictory objectives will be our focus with this new version of Rational Suite, which we expect to do well in the local market. " The new version is available with immediate effect.
