Rational ContentStudio unifies code and content development

Johannesburg, 09 Mar 2001

MGX has announced the local availability of Rational `s ContentStudio, the newest member of the Rational Suite product family.

ContentStudio combines Rational`s ClearCase with technology from Vignette Corporation to address the needs of companies challenged with managing content and code in complex e-business applications. ContentStudio helps e-business development teams code and content in a common repository. Rational`s ClearCase, named the leading software configuration management solution for four consecutive years by IDC, manages all the artefacts in an e-development project. These artefacts include code such as Java and XML, and content such as Microsoft Word documents, HTML and Adobe Acrobat files.

ContentStudio incorporates the Vignette Content Management Server, used by more than 1 000 companies to manage the content that drives -driven e-business applications.

In addition to ClearCase and Vignette`s Content Management Server, ContentStudio includes the Rational Team Unifying Platform (Rational RequisitePro, Rational ClearQuest, the Rational Unified Process, Rational TestManager, and Rational SoDA) and Rational SiteLoad, a Web-based one-hour load-testing tool. ContentStudio also fully integrates with Rational`s additional products, including the visual modelling tool, Rational Rose.

"Every significant e-business system is composed of two key ingredients: content and code," says Themi Themistocleous, sales director at MGX Software Development. "If content and code aren`t managed in unison, e-business sites will fail. With the increasingly critical role code and content play in software development, more and more customers are asking for an integrated solution to fulfil their content development needs. ContentStudio integrates code and content management in one complete solution."

ContentStudio provides browser-based templates integrated with Rational ClearCase to integrate code and content development and management. ContentStudio`s support of third-party authoring tools such as Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia DreamWeaver and Allaire HomeSite gives Web teams the freedom to use their desktop tools of choice. Similarly, content providers can continue to use Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, or browser-based fill-in templates. Software developers can also use their familiar Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Microsoft Visual Studio, IBM Visual Age for Java and Borland JBuilder. Team members can easily manage changes to websites using secure version control. This includes the management of all code artefacts such as Java, XML, C++ and Rational Rose models, and content artefacts such as HTML, GIFs and JPEGs.

ContentStudio includes scheduled deployment capabilities for these changes to ensure that the team`s activities are consistently synchronised. The Rational Suite family of products allows customers to create and manage all aspects of their e-business applications, from analysis and design with Rational Suite AnalystStudio and DevelopmentStudio, to site integrity and load testing with TestStudio. ContentStudio extends these benefits to content management by unifying Web development teams with common workflows, processes and artefact management.

"Until now, there has been no company that has successfully produced a suite fully capable of helping e-businesses keep their vast array of diverse types of information current and relevant in the area of Web development," says Rikki Kirzner, director, IDC Application Development and Deployment. "Today`s organisations require an integrated solution that can manage all types of information contained in and comprising their Web products in order to increase productivity and save time and money."
