Consumers hoping to broaden their TV choice could see a new offering sooner rather than later, with local pay-TV newcomer, On Digital Media (ODM), making preparations for its commercial debut.

The company this afternoon announced it has landed a deal with international technology supplier, NDS. ODM plans to unveil its consumer product by the second quarter of this year, although no fixed date has been set for the company's unveiling.

NDS will be the technology provider and integrator to support ODM's direct-to-home platform in SA.

ODM has also revealed its new TV service will be called TopTV.

TopTV is expected to provide 30 channels from various satellite services and ODM says it will give viewers the option of tailoring packages to suit their pockets.

“We chose to with NDS as it offers the most secure encryption for pay-TV and a middleware roadmap that will allow us to introduce more advanced features, including a DVR service, in the future,” says Vino Govender, ODM CEO.

Giles Wain, VP of regional sales for EMEA at NDS, says the deal is significant for the UK-based company. “On Digital Media is bringing pay-TV to middle-income households in SA for the first time. This represents a key win for NDS as we expand our presence in the emerging pay-TV market across the continent,” he adds.

NDS recently opened a new office in SA and will now invest in local expertise with the roll-out of ODM's new product.
