Re-routing SMMEs

Johannesburg, 20 Sep 2004

As small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) are expected to boom faster with the liberalisation of telecoms early next year, Cisco has announced a line of integrated services routers to deliver wire-speed , voice, video and other services to the SMME sector.

"Integration of voice and network security capabilities into routers will help SMMEs save time and money by simplifying deployment, administration and maintenance," says Willie Oosthuysen, technical director at Cisco Systems for sub-Saharan Africa.

The new 1800, 2800 and 3800 series routers incorporate a range of network security services such as Cisco`s router and security device manager, IOS software-based VPN firewall, and inline intrusion prevention system.

Cisco says the routers` integrated voice services offer higher combined and voice densities in a single system. Among other voice capabilities, the 2800 and 3800 series routers will enable users to reduce operating costs by switching to recently legalised IP telephony technologies.

Oosthuysen says the new routers effectively extend next-generation applications beyond the enterprise to the SMME market.
