EasyPay processed a record 36 million transactions last month, 30 million of which were electronic fund transfers (EFTs), buoyed by recent growth in the number of debit card holders.
This represents a 20% growth from December 2004.
Operations director Bruce Pollock says EasyPay also processed five million prepaid cellular transactions, 1.3 million account payments and 500 000 prepaid electricity bills.
"The growth in debit card volumes has certainly contributed to the high number of EFT transactions - things like the Mzansi banking system, for instance, have done a lot to help," he says.
Pollock cites the convenience of the cashback system as another driver of EFT volumes, saying the majority of EasyPay`s retail clients offer cashback at tills to consumers.
The increased numbers of points-of-access, the Christmas shopping frenzy and the fact that some major clients have "come on stream fully" in recent months are also contributing factors, he adds.
