Local AMD chipset distributor, Rectron, has reacted to a global price reduction by AMD and confirmed immediate price cuts of between 30% and 40% on AMD Athlon 1GHz and Duron 750MHz processors marketed in South Africa.
"The AMD price drop came as a surprise, around four weeks ahead of the schedule," says Rectron CEO Mark Lu. "However, Rectron has geared up to offer the price cuts to the local market."
The new pricing is designed to position these processors as entry-level offerings.
Lu says that in line with this repositioning, Rectron will offer two new high-end Gigabyte CPU platforms to the market:
The GA-7ZXR with VIA KT133 chipset, ATA100 IDE RAID controller and Creative CT5880 4-channel sound on-board.
The GA-7DXC with AMD 761 chipset, supporting the ATA100 and PC266 DDR Memory.
