Rectron - sole local Lite-On distributor - has released the Lite-On eTAU108, a robust, portable and travel-friendly external DVD writer.
“Targeted at notebook and netbook users who own machines that do not have internal DVD writers, the new eTAU108 is extremely light and portable, tough, travels well, is extremely easy to use and is fully plug-and-play,” says Werner Joubert, personal systems and storage business manager, Rectron.
“And with a suggested retail price of less than R699, it is clearly a very cost-effective option.”
Joubert explained that the eTAU108's robust design is underscored by its top-loading functionality: “While the Lite-On eTAU108 looks like your average USB DVD writer, it pops open from the top instead of needing a tray mechanism, which makes it very easy to use.”
Most other USB DVD writers use front-loading tray or slot type drives, which not only make them heavier, but also more prone to failure.
“Besides being far lighter, the Lite-On eTAU108 top loader's design makes it much more intuitive to use for inserting and removing discs from the drive,” he explained.
The unit also features Super AllWrite, a compatibility standard from Lite-On that enables it to read, write and re-write to any disc format on the market.
Another unique selling point is an innovative design feature in the base of the drive, where there is a convenient slot to store the unit's USB cable. Power supply comes directly from the notebook through this enclosed USB cable, so there is no need to be close to a power socket to operate the drive.
Writing speeds of the eTAU108 are 8X for DVD+/-R and DVD+RW, 6X for DVD+/-R DL and DVD-RW, 5X for DVD-RAM and 24X for CD-R(W). Reading speeds are 8X for DVD-ROM and 24X for CD-ROM.
The eTAU108 is available in a piano black and a pearl white version. Weighing less than 350 grams, the lightweight Lite-On DVD writer is designed to fit easily in any small bag, including those that come with miniscule netbooks.
