Rectron, one of South Africa`s fastest growing distributors of computer components PCs and peripheral products, has secured the distribution rights to Intel`s range of CPU and motherboard offerings. The company will also equip a sizable percentage of its locally assembled and branded PCs with Intel products.
According to Intel country manager Steve Nossel, the move is designed to significantly increase Intel`s share of the smaller reseller and product integrator market segment in South Africa.
"The smaller reseller and product integrator market is a key growth segment in sub-Saharan Africa," says Nossel. "These are the markets addressed by Rectron and its 7000-strong, nation-wide dealer base.
"We are looking to Rectron to maintain and improve on our upward momentum in these sectors where we have recorded a 20% quarter-on-quarter growth."
Rectron CEO Mark Lu says that better control of the channel market was Rectron`s key goal in setting out to secure the Intel distributorship.
Lu says that the deal is "long overdue" as Rectron has been locked in discussions with Intel for more than two years. It has, however, been unofficially marketing Intel products for more than five years.
"We are now in a position to formalise Intel sales to our channel partners and we expect to more than double the number of authorised Intel resellers and Intel product integrators [IPIs] in South Africa before year end.
"This will have significant spin-offs within the IT industry, as product integrators require suitable skills. The result will be an increase in training activity and additional job creation," he adds.
