Red Brick intros real-time data warehouse update

A major frustration facing some organisations using data warehouses is their inability to update the data warehouse in real-time. This is important for companies in the financial arena which might want to analyse both current and historical data.

Red Brick Systems` response has been the development of query-priority concurrency through Red Brick DecisionScape. This is Red Brick`s integrated environment of products, services, methodology and partnerships for decision support.

Analytic applications which require real-time data updates concurrently with high-performance analysis are expected to benefit from this innovatiion.

Red Brick`s query-priority concurrency functionality is designed to allow data to flow into a data warehouse continuously without affecting the query response times of business analysts using the system.

It makes Red Brick DecisionScape ideal for decision support systems and analytic applications that require real-time or continuous feeds of data, such as stock market, financial or Internet-related data, into a decision support system throughout the day.

Query-priority concurrency significantly reduces downtime for data warehouse data loading.

The result anticipated from these benefits is an immediate performance boost and return on investment in custom decision support solutions and packaged analytic applications that are designed to track and quickly analyse changing markets and calculations.

Enabling real-time updates

Red Brick 5.1 now enables concurrent queries and data updates while maintaining query performance.

This capability is based on a versioning technique that permits data modification transactions to occur to a different version of the same data while analysts are querying the data, says Aubrey van Aswegen, GM of Data Futures at Software Futures.

"Versioning offers a greater degree of flexibility in updating data than through traditional techniques used by general-purpose databases for data updates. Red Brick`s implementation provides a consistent view of the data for each query initiated," says Van Aswegen.

He adds that data warehouse administrators will benefit from the ease of use of query-priority concurrency. Once an administrator has implemented query-priority concurrency by creating a version log and initiating versioning, no other administrative requirements are necessary.

In addition, the implementation of query-priority concurrency is completly transparent to the end user, query tool or custom program.
