Reduce TCO, improve performance with free Sybase Linux deployment

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 2004

Sybase, an international provider of enterprise infrastructure and wireless software, has made available the first free deployment version of its enterprise-class Linux database for development and production purposes.

Using Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) Express Edition for Linux, the developer community, large organisations and small businesses will be able to build, test and deploy new applications without the burden of licence fees.

"With this Express Edition, users will be able to experience the significant performance and cost-savings benefits of Sybase ASE on Linux," says Stefan Ferreira, product manager of The Data Management Practice at Sybase South Africa. "With the availability of this free deployment version, we are deepening our commitment to the Linux community."

Sybase ASE demonstrates superior performance on Linux in transaction-heavy environments where reliability, security and high availability are crucial, Ferreira says.

The Express Edition for Linux is industrial-strength, is consistently enhanced with cutting-edge functionality, is free from complex licensing issues and will not pose unexpected integration problems.

"Sybase ASE on Linux offers the best of both worlds for any organisation," Ferreira says. "Combining ASE's overall power and ease of use with Linux running on industry-standard hardware results in unbeatably low total costs of ownership. With Sybase ASE Express Edition for Linux, we open up these benefits to a vast new ecosystem of organisations, developers, software vendors and system integrators, and share the risk with our customers and partners as they develop and test experimental concepts and exciting new applications."

Global organisations using Sybase ASE on Linux as their relational database management system of choice include Anvil, Global Card Services, Iroquois Gas Transmission System, Manitoba Family Services and Housing, Reuters and Veritas.

mLogica, a solutions integrator of enterprise software, has seen a growing demand among its client base for migration from other database platforms to Sybase ASE on Linux.

"An example is of a client that was running high volume transactions and queries over the Internet on a Microsoft SQL Server and Windows NT," says Amit Okhandiar, president of mLogica. "The client was suffering severe performance issues in this environment. Based on its long-term requirements for scalability, high performance, security and high availability, we migrated them to Sybase ASE on Linux and initial results are showing that performance has improved at least tenfold."

Sybase ASE on Linux has been recognised as the "Best Linux Database" in the 2003 LinuxWorld Magazine Readers Choice Awards; and The Standish Group, an IT project and value performance company in the US, has positioned Sybase ASE on Linux as the low total cost of ownership leader over Oracle, IBM and Microsoft.
