Planning for disaster recovery is always a good idea, but the best approach is disaster prevention.
In any data centre, regardless of size or location, environmental sensors, offsite duplication systems, and even simple JavaScript routines that trigger air-conditioning units when temperatures are above normal can help prevent serious problems that cause business delays and infrastructure nightmares.
A simple monitoring device with sensors that installs on a server rack, wall, or ceiling and regularly scans data centre locations for temperature changes is but one example of a device that could avert a potential disaster.
“Although many IT installations are housed in environments that have been specifically designed for that purpose, many, especially those of SMEs, utilise space/rooms that were not purpose-built and therefore were not equipped for managing these environments appropriately,” commented Elton du Preez of EDP Communications. “We have the capability of providing the right solution for the client from the various product offerings available to us, regardless of whether it's a multinational organisation, an SME or a very small company. In our view, a fundamental requirement is that notification and alerts are delivered to the support staff that are earmarked to take the actions required.
“We don't believe in disaster recovery per se, but in disaster prevention, and that is what the products we supply, install and maintain are designed to do,” concluded du Preez. “You can keep the sensor management as simple as you want, because an SME often does not have the time to manage the sensors. However, we have clients who get very creative and complex as well as those who just want an alert when a server goes past a set temperature.”
