Remote access servers (RAS) are the most application specific of LANTRONIX servers having the greatest demand for specific protocol and feature support.
LANTRONIX RAS units act as routers to make remote connections when appropriate, and support PPP and SLIP, the specific protocols for dial-in/dial-out connections, to transmit actual packets rather than just serial data.
The RAS products from LANTRONIX support a wide variety of user configurations that allow remote access applications to run unattended.
Typical applications
- Central Site: A corporate headquarters location or an ISP; secure dial in for remote users, high port density usually up to16 or even 32 ports, dial-back capability, packet filtering and modem sharing capability.
- Branch Office: LAN to LAN connection to the corporate site is made on an on-demand basis rather than a permanent connection; multiple ports allow for flexibility for additional bandwidth to a site or to support simultaneous dial-in and dial-out applications at a site.
- SOHO : Smaller remote offices or home offices needing dial-in or dial-out connectivity for small networks.
- Secure Consol Server : Security sensitive locations where access to serial consol ports on host systems needs authentication and accountability.

These products, the largest in the LANTRONIX RAS family, provides the central site with a great combination of speed and performance. Providing high port density for remote dial-in access, modem pooling and secure console server applications, the LRS32F permits any type of telecommunications equipment, from ISDN terminal adapters to 56Kbps modems with serial ports, to be utilized efficiently and effectively.
The LRS32F, like all other Lantronix LRS products, routes the IP, IPX and AppleTalk protocols, allowing the user to filter undesired packet traffic or make policy-based connection decisions. With flexible network connectivity in place, this fast, reliable access server with its large data handling capability and superior security support is an ideal choice for a central site.

- 16 of RJ45, RS-423/RS-232, 115 Kbps and full modem control per port.
- 10bT, 10B2 and AUI ports for LAN connection.
All other features are the same as the LRS32F above.
Used in environments where less port density is required, the LRS16 supports the same protocols and security features of the LRS32F and is equally suitable for reliable connections for in-bound, out-bound, LAN to LAN or console server applications.
- LRS2-O2 2-port, stand-alone.
- 2 of DB25, RS-423/RS-232, 115 Kbps and full modem control per port.
- 10BASE-T, 1OBASE2 and AUI ports for network interface.
Routes IP, IPX and AppleTalk protocols, Flash ROM and status LEDs for each port. CD-ROM with EZWebCon software, comm port redirector software and reference manual/installation guide. External 220VAC power supply. The LRS2 is a small unit designed to provide remote access services for small branch offices. With its two DB25 ports, this product supports simultaneous LAN-to- LAN connections and local dial-in access between branch and corporate offices. The extra port allows the support of bandwidth-on-demand feature (available on all multi-port LRS products). The small and distinctive profile of the LRS2 makes it easy to fit into the limited confines of a branch location. It features an additional RJ45 serial port for configuration (if required) and a LCD display with buttons that allow menu selections.
- LRS1-T-O2 1-port, stand-alone.
- 1 of DB25, RS-432/RS-232, 115 Kbps and full modem control per port.
- All other features are the same as the LRS2-02 above.
One of the smallest routers available today, this product is the ideal choice for small remote sites that need PPP support and policy based connections that require routing decisions. Using the same software, it supports the same features that its bigger family members support.
Thin server technology
Lantronix implements its thin server technology to make policy-based decisions without human intervention through software features. These decisions include: determining the amount of time a link is to remain connected if no data is being passed; whether a link should remain connected if only certain types of traffic are present; when to bring up a secondary link if multi-link PPP is desired); or whether a particular protocol or packet type should travel on the link.
Easy of use
Lantronix RAS products are easy to config and manage using EZWebCon GUI software. Included with all Lantronix products, EZWebCon provides easy-to-follow menus for point-and-click configuration and management. Configuration and monitoring is also available using telnet logins or serial consol connections. Lantronix comm port redirector software is also supported on all products. This software allows PC-based applications to access any port (and their attached devices) as if they were directly attached to the PC`s comm port. The Lantronix comm port redirector supports up to 64 virtual ports. This software is particularly valuable for users that want to provide modem pools for their networked devices.
Shared resource
A superior additional feature of the Lantronix RAS products is the configuration option allowing multiple ports on the units to be put into a "service" group. In this arrangement, a connection to that service will allow the user to access the next available port in the group rather than access a single port. This "hunting "facility allows users fair and easier access to networked resources attached to the unit. Special one-person groups can be assigned to priority users to allow them the critical access they may need.
Support
As new standards or protocols are developed for remote access technology, Lantronix RAS products keep pace with their ability to be upgraded via network download. Each Lantronix product contains Flash ROM which allows new software to be easily installed via down load.
