The only way to remove the frictions that usually exist between IT consumers and IT producers is through the deployment of powerful software.
So said Carl Eschenbach, president and COO of VMware, in a keynote address at the VMworld 2013 Conference in Barcelona yesterday.
He revealed that, today, IT administrators constantly clash with end-users, who have become more demanding, especially with the rise of the bring your own device (BYOD) phenomenon as well as the millions of apps that are finding their way into the enterprise.
"Nothing cannot be done with the use of powerful software," he said. "The only way we can do this is by deploying IT as service."
He pointed out that managing IT services today requires management solutions that are tightly integrated, leverage big data analytics, and are purpose-built for the dynamic nature of the software-defined data centre.
This approach provides proactive management and unprecedented operational visibility of the performance and health of applications and underlying virtual and physical infrastructure, including storage and networking, he added.
According to Eschenbach, far too often, enterprises are constrained by antiquated IT infrastructure that is too rigid and complex to readily fulfil business needs. Server virtualisation was a major step forward, significantly reducing IT costs while boosting efficiency and performance, he noted.
The software-defined data centre dramatically speeds up and simplifies the initial provisioning and ongoing management of fully virtualised compute, storage and networking architecture by applying powerful policy-driven automation.
The result is transformational levels of business agility along with operational efficiency, control and choice for IT and the business alike, he explained.
"For IT to keep pace with business demands, stay relevant and deliver IT services with agility, it must transition from being builders to brokers of IT services," said Ramin Sayar, senior VP and GM of cloud management at VMware.
"VMware cloud management solutions enable IT to deliver this agility while standardising and ensuring governance and control - whether the goal is to better manage a highly virtualised environment, build a vSphere-based private cloud, extend to the hybrid cloud, or broker services across many providers."
