Retailers continue to enjoy the DigiPoS experience

Johannesburg, 24 Jun 2003

Never-say-die reliability, versatility and comprehensive support are but some of the reasons driving DigiPoS system sales in southern Africa and around the world. Since the original launch date in 1997, PC-PoS South Africa has sold upwards of 5 000 machines locally and the international group has supplied almost 50 000 globally.

Dean Jules, DigiPoS product manager at the Johannesburg head office of PC-PoS SA, says: "Local retailers are looking primarily for a solution that is competitively priced but designed for their specific environment. Our DigiPoS systems are based on open architecture but we can still guarantee six months notice on any motherboard design changes," he says.

"These are vital cost of ownership benefits that other mainstream PC vendors simply cannot offer a large chain."

Contour Technology MD, Sagie Moodley echoes this sentiment and goes onto say: "The small footprint of the unit is a key requirement for our customers. The DigiPoS machine is also far more reliable than an off-the-shelf PC."

Moodley`s company has sold the system to Eskom and various municipalities nationwide for use in electricity pre-payment applications.

"The machine is clearly built for point of sale and not an off-the-shelf computer."

According to Moodley, the DigiPoS weathers technology changes better than a PC, which has to be regularly upgraded just to keep pace with software developments. "You don`t have to do this with the DigiPoS. It just keeps on going."

The DigiPoS system has also found a home in the industry where companies such as GAAP Point of Sale (UCS Group) have sold hundreds as part of their specialised restaurant solution. GAAP MD, JP D`abbadie says his company has been supplying the PC-PoS solution for some years now.

"We are very familiar with the DigiPoS technology and supporting the solution is therefore very easy," he says. "Over the years we have noted a marked improvement with each new system release and it`s immensely satisfying to note that PC-PoS lends a listening ear to customer feedback," says D`abbadie.

"Other benefits of the DigiPoS computer include a failure rate that is a fraction above a single percentage point thanks to PC-PoS`s ongoing commitment to product research and development. The DigiPoS is essentially a retail hardened machine capable of handling any application from small business to large retail organisations."

"We find that the solution offers our customers a good price-performance ratio," says Gert Kotze, MD of Systems and Supplies, a PC-PoS VAR based in Richards Bay. The company targets small retailers including supermarkets, butcheries and bottle stores. "It`s a nifty and reliable little machine which works well with our software and in terms of price compares very favourably with a standard PC," he says.

Jules goes on to praise the solution`s unique, Jet Stream cooling system. Designed to operate successfully in temperatures of up to 50 degrees centigrade. "The DigiPoS system may be used in every type of retail environment in any remote African location."

Commenting further, he says: "Connectivity and modular design are also very important aspects of point of sale systems. Four standard serial ports allow convenient connectivity of a wide range of PoS peripherals including our Epson printers, Metrologic scanners and other DigiPoS branded displays, cash drawers and keyboards."
