Retek Information Systems opens SA office

Johannesburg, 17 Jun 1997

The US-based company, which has a presence in countries around the world, provides information systems focused on merchandise management requirements throughout the enterprise and along the entire supply chain.

The Retek application suite has the Retek Merchandising System (RMS) at its foundation, which includes key functions such as inventory management, purchasing and receiving, price and promotion management, allocation and replenishment, retail financial control and reporting.

The suite also consists of a forecasting module, Retek Forecasting, as well as a data warehouse module which has been developed to specifically address the questions asked by retailers. Retek is designed to meet the needs of large retailers with a multi-store, multi-warehouse environment, allowing for both centralised and/or distributed processing.

The package consists of three parts: inventory control, merchandise management, and financial control, and runs off Oracle databases and tools. Retek has grown by over 100 per cent year on year for the past three years, and has become the dominant supplier of enterprise-wide retail solutions.

The strategy is to increase the global presence of the company, and certainly one of the growth markets for us is SA, says Devon Dalbock, newly-appointed country manager for Retek SA. Retek as a company is product-focused and will partner with Anderson Consulting and Q Data to provide implementation and systems integration skills.

The SA office will be staffed primarily with retail business consultants, technical consultants and sales people. The intention is to grow to ten people by the end of the year. According to Dalbock, Retek already has three major retail clients in SA, and is looking at rapidly expanding this number.

Our existing clients are Truworths, PEP Stores and Edgars, he says. These companies were introduced to Retek through our very close alliance with Oracle, and this has prompted the need for local representation - hence the formation of the SA office.

The SA office will fall under the control of Steve Fluin, Retek MD for Europe/Middle East/Africa. He is based in the Retek London office.

Retek, which was formed in 1986, was acquired in 1996 by HNC Software, a specialist in the application of neural network technology in client/server environments.

HNC develops, markets, integrates and supports advanced decision software based on computational intelligence. The company provides practical solutions in the areas of electronic payments, financial services, retail, insurance, direct marketing, and market research.
