eSafe Technologies SA has warned against the latest rewrite of the original Loveletter vandal, VBS.FriendMessage. eSafe has announced a HOT update available to all current users, and reminded home users that a free copy of eSafe Desktop 2.2 is downloadable from
www.esafe.co.za
.
Brett Myroff, CEO of eSafe Technologies SA, says the vandal will copy itself to the user`s Windows system`s folder and then modify AUTOEXEC.BAT with commands set to delete the user`s entire Windows operating system.
The vandal arrives with an attachment that reads FRIEND_MESSAGE.TXT.vbs. According to Myroff the subject line reads FRIEND MESSAGE with the body of the message being, "A real friend send this message to you".
eSafe`s product line offers multi-tier Internet content security that provides integrated solutions for comprehensive protection against viruses, vandals, inappropriate content and data exposure. "These products offers automatic, generic protection without the need for the latest virus table updates," says Myroff.
The I LOVE YOU virus devastated e-mail programs, and damage from the bug and its variants has been estimated at $7 billion, and could reach $10 billion, according to CNN reports. "Even variants of the original vandal will cause havoc and result in losses of millions of rands - the time has come for proactive security," concludes Myroff.
