Professional services firm Deloitte says consumer concerns have increased over the safety of food, including issues such as proper slaughtering processes.
Deloitte says manufacturers and retailers are introducing radio frequency identification (RFID) technology into their supply chains to enforce the laws governing food processing.
RFID tags will be used to reflect information about food products, including expiry dates and supply chain information, such as how long products were in transit before reaching the retailer.
Deloitte will be one of the exhibitors at the three-day African RFID conference scheduled to start on 3 August at the Sandton Convention Centre. The event is to focus on providing strategies for ensuring return on investment for RFID applications.
