Richard Pawson returns to SA

Johannesburg, 01 Jul 2003

"New Directions, New Challenges" is the subject of two upcoming presentations by Richard Pawson, Fellow of Computer Sciences Corporation`s Research Services and author of an acclaimed book, Naked Objects (Wiley 2002) that presents his 10-year research into the design of business systems to support business agility. Pawson will speak at CSC Research Services Management Updates to be held in Cape Town and Johannesburg in late July.

Pawson`s interactive talk spans three interlinking issues confronting technology and business executives: advanced systems design, naked objects and principles-based strategy. He will present real cases to illustrate these different themes.

Pawson, the originator of naked objects, a dramatically new concept in object-oriented design, asserts: "Business systems should consist of nothing more than a set of `naked` business objects that are exposed directly to the user. Systems built this way better accommodate future changes to business requirements and empower the user to solve problems, not just to follow processes."

Based on his research, Pawson finds there is a growing case for building an advanced systems development capability inside an organisation that will differentiate businesses from their competitors. Pawson`s approach to principles-based strategy and/ or architecture involves a mindshift towards a systems capability that is "leaner, more adaptable, and better able to deliver business value".

Prior to joining CSC in 1991, Richard managed his own advanced-technology development company, was a high-technology journalist and broadcaster, and in 1977 was closely involved in the launch of the first personal computers for Commodore in Europe.

As a service to its sponsoring organisations, CSC Research Services presents management updates every four months on cutting-edge topics facing business executives. Piet Opperman, Regional Director for CSC Research Services, says: "These updates provide an opportunity for executives to keep current on key developments, issues and trends."

This round of updates will be held in Cape Town on Tuesday, 22 July at the Vineyard Hotel, Newlands and in Johannesburg on Friday, 25 July at The Liberty Life Conference Centre, Lower Houghton. Attendance at these events is by invitation only.
