RIM eyes exclusive Blackberry platform

Blackberry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has reportedly bought mobile software company DataViz, with an eye on making mobile business applications that are exclusive to the Blackberry platform, writes TG Daily.

DataViz is the maker of the Documents-to-Go application, software that allows users to view Microsoft Office and other documents from their mobile phone.

According to a CNet report on DataViz and its buyout, "the majority of its employees will now focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform."

iPad sales to soar

UBS Investment Research's Mayard Um predicts soaring sales for the iPad, due to use of the device by businesses NewsFactor says.

One aspect of the iPad that is making it more acceptable by IT departments is that it runs the same operating system as the iPhone, with which companies are increasingly familiar.

The iPhone has been around long enough that it has become more enterprise-friendly, in such areas as security, and technical management.

Asia not ready for open source

Organisations in Asia are not as ready to go open source for key business applications, experts in the region say, ZDNet.

A survey has shown that it is a different story in the UK and US, with inclination growing.

In China, for instance, research conducted last year showed that 55% of organisations were actively piloting or using open source server operating systems, says Lawrence Goh, Asean executive director for technology consulting at Accenture.
