BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) is investigating the cause of a problem with its service on Vodacom's network that affected “a small number” of users yesterday.

RIM apologised to affected customers after a number of BlackBerry users complained of delayed BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and e-mail transmission from around 7am yesterday. According to the smartphone maker, all BlackBerry services were restored during the course of the morning.

While RIM did not give details as to what caused the problem, nor how many users were affected, Vodacom says the BlackBerry maker is investigating the cause of the problem. Vodacom's head of corporate affairs, Richard Boorman, says the problem was resolved by 11am.

“We don't have detailed information in terms of the number of customers affected, but it appears to have been a relatively small portion of our overall BlackBerry customer base,” says Boorman.
