Users of 3G cellphones are unlikely to be able to make video calls across networks anytime this year, say mobile operators.
Mobile service providers Vodacom and MTN say they have been unable to reach an agreement on a tariff for interconnecting the video service.
Vodacom executive director for corporate affairs Mthobi Tyamzashe says other 3G services are possible across different networks, but adds that until an agreement is reached, video telephony will remain limited to people on the same network.
"Discussions are still in progress and are looking promising, but I can not confirm any date when they are likely to be concluded. All I can say is that we would like to see them concluded as soon as possible," says Tyamzashe.
Donovan Smith, GM for MTN`s consumer group, says it is unlikely the issue would be resolved before the end of this year. He could not provide any further comment.
SA`s third mobile operator, Cell C, does not yet offer 3G services.
