Executive members of the South African Payroll Association have elected Steve Howes, technical specialist at Qdata DynamiQue, as chairperson of the organisation.
The SA Payroll Association has its headquarters in Edenvale, Gauteng, with affiliate chapters or committees serving KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The organisation is registered as a Section 21 company and has been established to spearhead the introduction and maintenance of professional standards within the field of payroll administration and management.
"Our core focus is to elevate the profile of the payroll profession among member companies and across various markets. Establishing effective standards is paramount because of the level of understanding that goes into payroll administration. The association most certainly has a role to play - aside from hosting seminars and an annual conference as well as issuing regular newsletters, the organisation facilitates dialogue between payroll professionals and the government, in particular the South African Revenue Service (SARS)," says Howes.
Seven members make up the committee that presides over approximately 300 existing members. According to Howes, the Payroll Association is set to play an even greater role going forward, especially in light of what he describes as "fundamental changes that will have an impact on payroll professionals and their working environment, as well as on companies across the spectrum".
"Issues such as the introduction of tax relief for directors from 1 March this year and learnership programmes via the Services Seta are just two examples of the level of activity affecting the profession at this time. Companies have to be aware of these developments and I believe this body has the clout, capability and experience to effectively assist member companies. Payroll administrators in particular can benefit from the organisation's advice and knowledge," adds Howes.
The SA Payroll Association is affiliated to a number of worldwide professional payroll associations including: The Institute of British Payroll and Pensions Management, American Payroll Association, Canadian Payroll Association and The Association for Payroll Specialists (Australia).
Outgoing chairperson Dave Teron will continue to serve on the executive committee and he views this change as a positive phase in the growth and development the association.
The South African Payroll Association is a Section 21 company established to safeguard the interests of payroll administration professionals and member companies within the payroll industry.
