US NBase-Xyplex, distributed locally by Q-Data Distribution, has premiered its new X.16 network supercomputer in SA. It is due for general release in early 2000.
The X.16 is the new flagship in the NBase-Xyplex product portfolio and has been designed to establish new benchmarks for server flexibility, bandwidth delivery, scalability and security.
"The X.16 has an architecture designed to survive with multiple levels of redundancy, and load sharing capabilities, live systems self testing and sophisticated power management," says Wayne Parkes, NBase-Xyplex Africa sales manager.
The product combines intelligent routing capabilities with advanced server features. It supports wide diversity protocols, switching speeds and interfaces directly into the device.
"It delivers extended functionality in terms of customised network management, complex security enhancements (including firewall solutions), Web caching and dynamic network reconfiguration functionality," he explains. Administration can all be done from a browser, as the device itself is headless.
Parkes adds that the X.16 can also accommodate network analysis devices (RMON probes) and act as a high performance distributed server, at the same time leveraging the powerful quality-of-service and traffic management capabilities of Ethernet and IP-based networks.
From a technical perspective, the NBase-Xyplex X.16 Network Supercomputer features four 64Gbps matrix cards, 16 access cards with four IO modules each and a range of IOM module options.
The X.16, with its new-generation Distributed Architecture Real-Time Operating System, localised hardware control over switching cores and switch matrices, has a generalised application interface for user applications.
