Nine local pupils will represent SA in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, next week.
Intel says finalists stand to win over $4 million in awards and scholarships. Prizes are awarded in 17 categories, one of which is computer science. There is also an overall winner, and two runners-up.
According to Parthy Chetty, head of corporate affairs at Intel, in addition to the opportunity to win a scholarship, the fair gives participating pupils a chance to meet and exchange ideas with fellow pupils across the world.
He says pupils are also encouraged to design projects that address problems in their immediate communities.
Says Chetty, Intel believes that, through participation in this fair, pupils can be encouraged to pursue careers within the scientific field, stressing that there is a shortage of scientists in SA, as well as in other developed countries around the world.
