The distribution of high-definition projector-based television screens, in sizes of up to 146-inches, will begin in the next few weeks, says local distributor Des Hobart.
As MD of The Humungous Screen Company, Hobart plans to begin distribution of the sets, produced by local company Quintessence, in restaurants and bars over the next few weeks.
He adds that in time he hopes to put them in shopping malls, department stores, conference venues and homes.
"The screen offers a complete masking of pixelation when used for television viewing, but can also be adjusted to provide sharp definition for small font reproduction if it's being used for data," says Hobart.
Quintessence has the capability to manufacture around 10 per month, but Hobart says systems are being upgraded which could allow a production rate of up to 10 per hour.
He adds that pop-down systems can be integrated into the set, so that the screen can be hidden when out of view.
The expected pricing range for the projector, screen and DVD surround sound varies from around R40 000 for the smallest screen (78-inch) to around R80 000 for the 146-inch screen.
