When IBM recalled another 60 000 monitors worldwide due to a potential fire hazard, this did not affect the local market, as the displays in question had not been released locally, IBM SA says.
According to US reports, IBM has more than doubled the number of monitors in its voluntary recall programme, first announced in March. But Geoff Saunders, IBM SA marketing manager personal computing division, said the G51 and G51t monitors were never released in South Africa.
IBM and LiteOn Technology, a Taipei manufacturer, have expanded the March recall to include an additional 63 000 G51 and G51t monitors, manufactured in September 1998. The recall, which started with about 56 000 monitors, was initiated in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The agency has said the monitors "should be turned off immediately because they can overheat". IBM and LiteOn have received seven reports of monitors overheating and smoking, including one report of minor property damage and one report of minor smoke inhalation, according to the CPSC.
LiteOn is picking up all the costs of the recall, a spokesman added.
