Connected services helps to bridge the gap between online software solutions and traditional desktop application, says Madelein van der Watt of Sage Pastel.

Sage Pastel Payroll & HR has added connected services as part of its efforts to help lighten the workload of HR and payroll managers and bridge the gap between the growing trend towards online and the traditional desktop application users.

Madelein van der Watt, development manager, at Sage Pastel Payroll & HR, notes that the online solution allows employees and managers to access HR without having the HR manager acting as a middleman.

Employees are able to make online applications for leave, loans, bursaries, travel claims, to view their payslips and update personal information, no matter where they are, as long as they have an Internet connection.

"Connected services enables SMEs to extend their desktop payroll with an online solution that eases the growing burden of HR managers and payroll administrators, " says Phillip Meyer, technology director at Sage Pastel Payroll & HR.

"There is no paperwork and no direct interaction required - online workflow allows leave applications to follow the regular approval process even if staff or managers are not in the office," says Van der Watt.

She adds that connected services give a Web-based self-service tool that enables employees to manage and maintain their own information online without HR administrative burden. This will allow HR managers to focus more on employee wellness, training and achieving business goals.

She explains that frictionless or automated updates of payroll legislation are also part of connected services. They enable traditional desktop applications to update seamlessly over the Internet with minimal intervention from the user.

Watt believes that connected services help to bridge the gap between online software solutions and traditional desktop application, providing users with a seamless upgrade path to a completely cloud-based model.

In addition, they enable the payroll administrator to set up each employee with a mobile profile to which payslip and leave details can be published. All they have to do is download the mobile application from a mobi-site to view their information.

"Sage has done well during the last 25 years to solve business problems for small and medium business owners in South Africa. With mobile services, we are attempting to improve the lifestyle of our customers and their employees," she concludes.
