Sahara announces newest ASUS server

Johannesburg, 14 May 2003

Local ASUS distributor, Sahara Computers, has introduced the AP 1700R-S5 server to the local market. Incorporating the latest GC-LE chipset by ServerWorks, the ASUS server runs on two Xeon DPs for processing speeds of up to 3.06MHz.

The AP1700R-S5 is fitted with the advanced controller for U320 SCSI hard drives, boosting data transfer up to more than 3Gbps. Six units of U320 SCSI hard drives are implemented for hot swapping and RAID 0-5 functions. The LAN controller supports dual Gbit LAN to facilitate the most efficient networking and the AP1700-S5 also comes with five PCI-X slots for high-speed PCI add-on cards.

"Offering great flexibility, the AP1700R-S5 is a standalone tower server that can also be converted to a 5U rack-mount server depending on the application," says Atul Gupta, MD, Sahara Computers. "The AP1700R-S5 adopted a friendly 'tool-less' design, meaning tools are not required during system assembling and maintenance services."

Says Jack Chen, SA channel manager at ASUS: "Thermal design and pre-warming mechanism features are key to a reliable and high-performance server. The AP1700R-S5 is the best example of our efforts."

Gupta says the ASUS servers are stringently tested for heat dissipation, vibration, humidity, electromagnetic wave emission and compatibility, making them trust-worthy e-business machines.

The AP1700R-S5 comes bundled with a complete suite of server management software. The suite offers two management software applications: ASMA (ASUS Server Management Agent) and ASWM (ASUS System Web-Based Management).

"Server administrators can use the software to monitor system status such as CPU operation, temperature, voltage and fan speed from a remote location," says Gupta.

"When unauthorised opening of the server chassis occurs, ASUS servers will immediately send warning messages via e-mail or SMS," he continues. "ASUS has also included a full version of the ServerProtect anti-virus software to protect the system."
