Sahara appointed Microsoft OEM distributor

Johannesburg, 02 Apr 2002

Microsoft SA has appointed Sahara Computers, part of the Sahara Group, as its third local original equipment manufacturer (OEM) software distributor. In terms of the deal, which is effective from the beginning of this year, the distributor has been licensed to sell Microsoft Delivery Service Partner (DSP) products to system builders.

The vendor has also stated that it will be working very closely with Sahara Computers in implementing anti-piracy programmes among entry-level system builders.

"This is not only beneficial to our channel but also enables us to feed back to Microsoft which licences were sold and to whom. We thus partner with them in the fight against software piracy," comments Ross Jardien, Sales Manager at Sahara Computers.

Says Thomas Hansen, director: small and medium business group at Microsoft SA: "We are happy with this OEM agreement with Sahara Computers as it is based on a business relationship that has shown strong growth since Sahara committed itself as a Microsoft sub-distributor two years ago."

This agreement not only lends credibility to Sahara Computers but also provides the distributor with a competitive-edge in the market. "The fact that we are able to sell OEM software enables us to offer our Sahara brand of PCs at a better price point," adds Jardien.

According to Gordon Frazer, deputy MD at Microsoft SA, the OEM distribution partners are extremely important to the company's business and play an integral role in the Microsoft value chain.
