Sahara Computers raises SA's ICT flag in India

Local company enters into joint venture to establish ICT manufacturing plant in India to supply fast-growing market

Proudly South African company, Sahara Computers (Pty) Ltd, has entered into a joint venture partnership with Sahara India Pariwar to launch "Sahara Computers and Electronics Ltd" (SCEL) in Lucknow, India on Friday, 10 September 2004.

SCEL's initial manufacturing plant, based in Hardwar, Uttaranchal, will supply a broad range of information technology products that will include computers, servers, laptops and peripherals through 25 distribution hubs covering all major states in India.

Sahara India Pariwar is one of the leading business organisations in India and a recognised brand within India's infrastructure and housing, aviation and media industries.

Atul Gupta, MD of Sahara Computers, says: "This definitely is a unique opportunity for Sahara Computers to enter the rapidly expanding Indian market. Our association with an organisation like Sahara India Pariwar and with the support of top international partners like AMD, Creative, Delta, Epson, Intel, Microsoft, MSI, Samsung and Symantec shall enable us for exchange of technology and skills and bring out the fruits of innovation between India and SA."

Speaking at the launch, Dr Essop Pahad, Minister of Presidency, Government of SA, said India and SA had a long-standing relationship and it was further strengthened on Friday with the announcement of a new joint venture company which would bring global quality technology products to India.

SCEL's regional offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad will provide sales, marketing and a quality service management centre to ensure the brand is never compromised.

"We have partnered with an experienced and established company in the Indian market, that is recognised for its commitment and contribution towards socio-economic development in India," says Gupta.

Both Sahara India Pariwar and Sahara Computers view this venture as having several short- and long-term benefits, chief of which is the provision of reliable and affordable information technology in one of the world's largest emerging markets.

"Further down the line we expect the project to create an effective channel for the exchange of technology skills and the fruits of innovation between India and SA. Local communities will benefit directly from greater access to affordable, quality product," adds Gupta.

Meanwhile, a range of world-class products that will be made available from Sahara Computers and Electronics were unveiled at a glittering ceremony at the state-of-art Sahara Saher auditorium on Friday. A large number of distinguished guests, including film stars, cricketers, politicians and corporate leaders, were present on the occasion.

The event was attended by former Indian captain Kapil Dev, film stars Anil Kapoor and Raj Babbar, who is also a Lok Sabha MP. Also present on the occasion were the original equipment manufacturer partners of Sahara Computers (Pty) Ltd - AMD USA & India, Epson India, Intel India, Maxtor, Microsoft India, MSI, Samsung, Asrock and Hynix.

Dr Essop Pahad said that since 1994 there had been lot of meetings between the government officials of India and SA. "The joint venture formed today is a great day in the history of the two countries," he observed.

Subrata Roy Sahara, the Managing Worker and Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar, said it was the sustained effort of UPDC chairman Amar Singh and his untiring efforts which had helped in bringing a mega joint venture project like the one being set up by Sahara India Pariwar and Sahara Computers (Pty) Ltd to Uttar Pradesh.
