Sahara makes presence felt in consumables arena

Johannesburg, 14 Feb 2003

Since opening its doors earlier this year, Sahara Consumables - a joint venture between Sahara and global IT consumables specialist distributor, Despec - has gone from strength to strength. According to Atul Gupta Sahara MD, the company experienced an upsurge in consumables sales and managed to grow its client base substantially.

Sahara Computers stocked a limited range of consumables prior to opening this specialised division. "Previously we serviced our consumable clients via Sahara Computers. However, it soon became apparent that in order for us to truly service our market segment and provide resellers with the products they require, we needed a division that would focus solely on consumables," comments Gupta. He adds that since adding this division, Sahara's consumable unit sales increased by 590%.

Sahara Consumables currently offers scanners, digital projectors and printers, as well as ribbon, ink and toner cartridges. Plans are in the pipeline to extend this offering still further. The company has also secured sole distribution on a number of fronts.

Says Gupta: "Initially we bought stock off local distributors, but it was always our intention to acquire official distribution status on all the products we stock, which we did achieve earlier this year on various products."

Growing its printer and cartridge business over the coming year is a key focus for Sahara Consumables. "We have taken the time, during 2002, to establish our client base within the consumables sector, gauging the actual reseller and end-user demand. On the basis of this information, we believe 2003 holds great promise and we will be aggressively pursuing market share by offering specialised service and quality products," concludes Gupta.
