Technology distributor Sahara Computers won first place in one of the four Sustainable Growth Awards categories last night.

Sahara won the award in the private company category for sustainable growth over three years, while Bearing Man came first in the three-year listed category. In the five-year private category, Centurion Systems took first place and Afrox won the award in the five-year listed category.

Afrox Healthcare was also named the overall winner at a gala function in Johannesburg.

The Sustainable Growth Awards, sponsored by First National Corporate and Business Solutions, FleetAfrica, Telkom Directory Services and Espi'al Go-to Market, are aimed at recognising SA's top growth companies for their contributions to growing the economy.

"The Sustainable Growth Awards encourage the competition of smaller, private companies against larger, listed entities, since growth, rather than size, is the determining factor, says Espi'al Go-to-Market CEO Rudi Kr"uger, one of the judges.

Gavin Tarr of FNB says he is impressed by the fact that the number of entrants this year was 39% up on last year, but more impressive was the quality of the entrants.

With an annual turnover of close to R1 billion, Sahara Computers has a staff complement of more than 320 people and a distribution base of about 4 000 outlets countrywide. It also has offices in Kenya, Botswana and Dubai.

The awards' organisers say that because of the increased number of qualifying entrants, next year's awards will have regional and industry-specific awards.
