The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) is hosting a presentation, discussion and exhibition on broadband service provision in SA.
The event, titled the Broadband Shootout, will feature fixed and mobile broadband providers Telkom, MTN, Vodacom, Sentech and Wireless Business Solutions.
"The SAIEE views broadband technology and the cost-efficient provision thereof as a vital economic enabler in SA. This is the key motivation for facilitating the event," says SAIEE president, Prof Bea Lacquet.
Each of the five participants will give a 15-minute presentation and demonstration, addressing issues like offerings, technology application areas, user targets, pricing and benefits. This will be followed by a panel discussion open to the audience.
Attendees will be able to view the products and services on offer from the five participants as well as from other technology and equipment suppliers.
The aim of the Broadband Shootout is to inform the public about current and future broadband options and enable users to compare their applicability, advantages, disadvantages and pricing in order to make informed choices, says Lacquet.
"While broadband is used by millions of people around the world, SA has lagged in the adoption of fixed broadband technology. However, this is speeding up now with wireless, wireline, 3G mobile and other mobile services on offer."
The forum will be held at the SA Military History Museum, Saxonwold, Johannesburg, on 1 September at 2pm. Entrance is free. For more information, visit www.saiee.org.za.
