Samsung clarifies trade-in offer

The leading smartphone maker says its trade-in offer is for all smartphone brands, not just BlackBerry.

Samsung's trade-in offer is not aimed exclusively at BlackBerry users, despite a tweet the company posted this week positioning it as such.

This is according to George Ferreira, VP and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa, and comes after the company took to social media on Tuesday to announce BlackBerry users could trade their old handsets in for a discount on a new Samsung Galaxy.

This followed a day after BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) was made available for Android and iPhone users.

Ferreira says Samsung is obligated to deliver a "collaborative and innovative consumer experience" to the market - and it does so through what it calls smart partnerships, and alliances.

He says Samsung's "Smart Trade" programme is one of these initiatives, but it has only been implemented in Nigeria, with further market rollout to be confirmed.

"As with all marketing strategies, different initiatives are launched and customised per region. This campaign in Nigeria offers consumers the opportunity to trade in any smartphone for a Samsung device."

Yesterday evening, Samsung Mobile Africa tweeted about its trade-in service again, refraining from mentioning BlackBerry specifically: "#Samsung offers Smart Trade on all smartphone devices. For more information, visit your nearest Brand Store now."

Without making mention of the tweets singling out BlackBerry users, BlackBerry responded today saying the campaign is not exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones. "[It] offers consumers the opportunity to trade in any smartphone for a Samsung device."
