Samsung DCS 70: The latest in digital communication for SMEs

By IT Public Relations
Johannesburg, 06 Sept 2002

The DCS 70 from MIA Samsung Telecommunications has all the benefits of the larger DCS digital communication system, but with the small to medium business customer in mind. Whether the business needs a DECT Digital Cordless, Automated Attendant, ISDN, Automatic Call Distribution, Least Cost Routing, Voice Mail or Computer Telephony Integration, the DCS 70 has them all, plus many other exciting features without the large price tag.

"The DCS 70 has been specifically designed to accommodate a company`s growth and success," says MIA Samsung Telecommunications MD Malcolm Driessel. "The combination of modular expansion and universal card slots allows the DCS 70 to economically expand as the business grows. Starting with as little as four lines and eight extensions, the DCS 70 can be expanded up to a maximum of 18 lines (24 Basic Rate or 30 Primary Rate ISDN lines and 40 digital extensions. Should the business outgrow the capacity of the DCS 70 basic cabinet, simply add an Expansion cabinet to provide the additional capacity needed."

The DCS 70 supports the latest ETSI ISDN standards for both Basic Rate and Primary Rate services. "ISDN offers a number of benefits to the business, including allowing customers faster access to staff via Direct Indial; simplifying current services by consolidating communication needs; and faster access to the Internet," Driessel continues. "Users can use Direct Indial to programme a name for each indial number, thus enabling them to easily identify important clients or advertising calls. To ensure that the business can take advantage of future multimedia applications as they develop, the DCS 70 can support ISDN extensions to provide 128kbps at the desktop. All this is done while reducing overall call costs."

With the introduction of Caller ID services the DCS 70 allows users to see who is calling by glancing at the LCD display. Up to 200 names can be held in the system, and responses and the handling of an incoming call can be personalised. Additionally, the last 50 calls that the extension has received can be reviewed, the Caller ID stored for calling at a later date or, while on a call, the user can see who the next caller is before responding. The Caller ID information can also be recorded on the SMDR output from the DCS 70 system.

The optional Automated Attendant (AA) on the DCS 70 allows users to tailor the system to respond to their customers in a professional and courteous manner. The AA can be programmed to answer calls only when the receptionist is busy on a call, or it can act as the main answering point, directing callers to the appropriate destination efficiently. Either way, the AA guarantees that all calls are answered within a predetermined time. The AA can also be set up to handle multiple departments or companies sharing the same system, each with its own personalised greetings and customer dialling plans. The AA has four ports to ensure it has sufficient capacity to meet the call handling needs of the business.

Computer telephony integration (CTI) adds a new dimension in managing the communication and information needs into the new millennium. Supporting the Microsoft Windows TAPI standard, the DCS 70 allows users to maximise the use of their existing resources and improve their customer service. Database dialling, intelligent call and message handling, integration of voice, fax, e-mail and outbound call management are just some of the applications CTI opens up.

The DCS 70`s integrated digital voice processing system ensures that important messages are no longer missed. Detailed messages can be received and acted upon efficiently without playing telephone tag. The receptionist can also be freed from taking messages for other productive pursuits.

"With a fully integrated digital system, simplicity of operation is the key, as many of the features can be accessed by programmable feature keys on the DCS digital handsets," says Driessel.

The DCS 70 supports a range of hands-free digital handsets that combine smart design and powerful functionality to meet the needs of the business. The most powerful provides a Two-line, 16-character LCD with a context-sensitive menu structure to ensure the system`s power is delivered to the fingertips. With 24 or 12 programmable buttons, many of which have tri-colour LEDs to provide feature status at a glance, each user can access their most popular features at the touch of a button. For the receptionist, an additional 48-programmable button module can be added to provide complete extension status information. Additionally, the six-programmable button digital handset ensures that there is a model to suit all situations.

The DCS 70 also supports industry standard analogue telephones, modems, fax machines and cordless phones, such as the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications option. The DECT allows total mobility within the business with the crystal clear sound and security of digital communications.

"No more crackle and hiss," Driessel promises. "Users can move freely between up to three micro cells with interruption-free handover when passing from one cell to another.

"With capacity for up to 24 DECT handsets now anyone who needs to be mobile can be in contact at all times," he concludes.
