Samsung has unveiled the first of its 'wearables': the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch.

Designed as a companion device for Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets, the watch features a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED 320 x 320 display, with a metal surround.

The band comes in several colours: jet black, mocha gray, wild orange, oatmeal beige, rose gold, and lime green, to suit all tastes, and is, according to Samsung, "packed with technology".

The device works with the new Galaxy Note 3 unveiled today, as well as the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition also introduced today. With a upgrade it will work with the Galaxy S4, with upgrades for the S3 and the Note 2 in the pipeline.

The wristband houses a 1.9MP camera, which operates with a simple swipe that Samsung says will ensure no special moments are missed. In addition, the wearer can snap a picture of a foreign language sign, which the device can translate.

To answer a call, the user simply needs to lift their hand to their ear. It features a fitness tracker, as well as 70 apps optimised for the device. Music can also be controlled from the wrist.

The battery boasts a "just longer than a day" 25 hours use on a single charge. To charge, click an exterior device onto the display and plug in via the usual Samsung micro USB.

Samsung said the watch was designed to meet two needs: to be at the forefront of technology, and to offer the fastest access to information without having to rootle round in a pocket or bag for a tablet or phone.

The Gear will be widely available from 25 September. No recommended price was disclosed.
