Samsung posts first loss
Samsung Electronics has posted its first-ever quarterly loss, hammered by devastating results in its memory chip and flat screen, states The US Daily.
The memory chips and liquid crystal displays developer posted an October-December net loss of $16.16 million (R160.4 million) against profit $1.5 million (R15.8 million) a year ago, and $8.7 billion (R87 billion) in the third quarter of 2008.
Analysts had earlier forecast a $184 million (R1.84 billion) net loss, which represents Samsung's first quarterly net loss since the company started providing quarterly earnings breakdowns in 2000.
LG profit falls 85%
LG Electronics reported an 85% plunge in fourth-quarter operating profit as the company dropped the prices for its components to compete for holiday sales amid a slowing global economy, says Video Business.
The electronics company's digital media division, which includes DVD and Blu-Ray disc player operations, reported a net loss from both its overseas units and foreign exchange. The division's operating profit was $3 million (R30 million), down from $19 million (R194 million) a year earlier, despite boosting sales 11% to $930 million (R9.3 billion).
LG also says its loss from its TV-making operations widened 27% despite a 16% jump in sales, also likely due to holiday price cuts. Liquid-crystal-display TV sales jumped 57% from a year earlier, while plasma TV sales fell 6%.
Canal+ equips 188 points of sale
Canal+ Cyfrowy, the operator of the Cyfra+ digital TV platform, equipped 188 points of distribution in Poland with Cayin digital signage system, reports Free Press Release.
Three hundred LCD displays in Cyfra+ points of sale in Poland will be connected to one multimedia network. The Cayin digital signage system enables each or some grouped screens to show multimedia content immediately and simultaneously and all content can be arranged through Internet.
“When a customer comes to our point of sale, we only have seconds to catch his attention. Digital signage allows us to grab ones' attention with dynamic, updated, and interesting content,” says Canal+ Cyfrowy's trade marketing co-ordinator Krzysztof Miodek.
