Samsung steps up TFT production

Samsung Electronics, Korea`s biggest hardware company, has made a tactical decision to increase the production of its thin-film-transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT). "Samsung is hoping to cement its global market share in TFT production, which at 20% already puts the company well in the lead," explains Sarah Le Roux, Samsung business manager at Tarsus Technologies. "Samsung has recently completed a fourth generation smelting furnace, which gives it the capacity to produce upwards of 40 000 TFT screens per month," notes Le Roux.

The acceleration of monitor and specifically notebook technology has increased the global demand for TFT screens. The weight of notebooks and monitors are significantly decreased by TFT technology. "Samsung can produce 10 million units of 550mmX650mm substrate glass annually with this fourth smelting furnace, and it has plans to build a fifth and sixth," adds Le Roux. The production line will churn out two types of TFT: a 21.3-inch and a 15-inch, to be used in both PC monitors and notebooks.

The increased production should please consumers, as the price of notebooks and TFT monitors is likely to come down. Because TFT displays offer benefits such as a smaller footprint, slim design and a flicker free image that obviates eyestrain, demand from corporate - and domestic - users is increasing. With its aggressive manufacturing initiatives and outstanding products, Samsung is looking to capture an ever greater share of the market," concludes le Roux.
