The NX300 may have a vintage feel and compact design, but it boasts a range of new features.

Samsung's NX300 camera debuts in SA today.

The flagship model in Samsung Electronics' NX camera series has a vintage feel and boasts a range of new features, most notably the NX 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, which is the first one-lens 3D system capable of capturing both images and HD movies in 3D.

"Not only does [the NX300] deliver incredible speed and accuracy through advanced photographic features, but it is truly built around the user, with upgraded Smart Camera functionality - making using and sharing both easy and seamless. We are also very proud to introduce the first one-lens 3D system alongside the NX300," says Michael Gibson, business leader for imaging at Samsung SA.

According to the brand, the NX300 also features 'Smart Camera' capabilities, which use the camera's connectivity for enhanced social and sharing functions. The Samsung Smart Camera app, available for Android and iOS, includes a Remote Viewfinder function, which enables easier capture of self-portraits or group photos.

Smart Camera's AutoShare allows up to five devices to be linked to the camera for automatic, instant upload of every photo to a smartphone or tablet for safe-keeping, while Mobile Link allows users to select and transfer images manually, says Samsung. Alternatively, AllShare Play allows images to be automatically backed up to the cloud. Images can also be shared directly from the camera via e-mail or social networking sites, using the camera's Direct Link hotkey.

The 84mm AMOLED touch-screen features a tilt display, allowing easier high- and low-angle shots. The camera features a Hybrid Auto Focus system for fast, accurate contrast detection, and 1/6 000-second shutter speed, with 8.6fps shooting mode.

Also new to the NX range are the NX300's 20.3MP APS-CMOS sensor, designed to capture high-quality images with life-like colours, and the wide ISO range (ISO100-25600), designed to cope with even the darkest conditions.

For those with minimal technical knowledge, or time, the Camera's 'Smart Mode' provides 14 different settings, such as 'Light Trace' or 'Action Freeze' to achieve effects without having to manually adjust parameters such as aperture and shutter speed, notes Samsung. The i-Depth facility allows simple adjustment of the depth of an image using the i-Function system, which uses the lens itself to modify camera parameters.

The camera will be available at leading retailers in a price range of R8 999 to R12 000.
