Samsung warns consumers against hoax SMS competition

Johannesburg, 14 May 2010

Samsung Electronics Co, a global leader in the consumer electronics industry, has urged consumers not to take heed of a hoax SMS doing the rounds.

Consumers have been receiving an SMS stating the following: “Congratulations. Your no. was among the lucky winners on the SAMSUNG YEARLY PROMOTION. You won, R120,000. Ticket no. 0166PS. Call Mark Nelson... for your cash prize.” Consumers are then asked to provide banking details to receive their cash prize.

“We urge consumers not to fall prey to this hoax and not to provide any banking details to the abovementioned person,” states Nancy Gwama, Head of Corporate Communications at Samsung South Africa. “This is not an official competition run by Samsung and we are in the process of investigating the source of its origin.”
