In January Samsung South Africa decided to incorporate Lightscribe technology and related software into its optical drive offering. This is available exclusively through the local ICT supplier, Sahara Computers.
Lightscribe is an innovative new multimedia disk technology that uses a specialised disc drive, specialised media and label-making software to enable users to burn labels directly onto CDs and DVDs, removing the need to use unsightly tape or felt-tip pen labels on the media.
This technology is currently available only in laptop and PC optical drive systems, though there are plans to incorporate it into consumer electronics products such as set-top DVD recorders.
Graeme Fuller, Product Manager for Optical Media Solutions (OMS) at Sahara, says that while only specific manufacturers offer the technology, there is a renewed interest from the market.
"Not all of major optical drive manufacturers offer a Lightscribe option as part of their respective product ranges. Samsung leads the field in terms of technology," says Fuller. "Samsung is currently among the top two largest selling brands of optical drives worldwide, and therefore it is a significant indicator of the strength of Sahara to be the exclusive distributor of Samsung OMS in South Africa."
"Samsung is an established brand internationally and locally and is well renowned for its quality and innovative products. Lightscribe is a boost to the process of multimedia management and presentation and it reinforces our offering to the local digital lifestyle environment," adds Gary Naidoo, deputy MD of Sahara.
"We view this technology as a crucial value-added component to our current optical portfolio and we are confident that it makes a difference in the lives of consumers," explains Naidoo. "Users can record DVDs via the PC using software programs linked to the Lightscribe package and then burn the movie onto a disk and create a monochrome picture and label for the disk."
