Sandton City, SA`s biggest shopping centre, has invested R1.5 million in rolling out what it describes as the country`s largest WiFi hotspot.
The hotspot provides 24/7 instant Internet connectivity, the centre`s marketing manager, Karen Elson, says in a statement.
The hotspot, covering 128 000m^2 of retail and office space, will be followed by other services within Sandton City over the next year.
Elson says the hotspot will give shoppers wireless access at speeds of up to 54Mbps - rather than 3G`s 384Kbps - anywhere in the centre at a cost of between 6c and R1.50 a minute, without any contract or fixed monthly fees.
"We are situated in the country`s business heartland surrounded by blue chip corporates and business entities like the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Many of our shoppers are time-constrained business executives or international business travellers who expect to have such technology at their fingertips," adds Elson.
She says Wireless G, a South African provider of global broadband Internet access with 250 million international subscribers, installed the WiFi hotspot.
Wireless G will operate the service in partnership with Telkom and other billing channel partners, Elson states.
