The South African Oracle User Group (SAOUG) conference, taking place in Sun City from 6 to 8 October, has drawn significant interest from international vendors and users, many of which are presenting papers geared towards increasing the value local Oracle users can achieve from their technology systems.
According to SAOUG chairman, Bryan Roestorf, presentations and sessions have been selected based on their relevance for Oracle users, while avoiding vendor hype and promotion.
"With a growing agenda of dynamic topics and speakers, we confidently anticipate that this conference is the premier event for Oracle users in SA to learn how to maximise their investment in Oracle technologies," he says.
Highlights of the conference agenda include a presentation from Computer Associates' principal architect Christopher Elvin, titled "Addressing Oracle Fragmentation".
"This session will examine the issue of space management for Oracle databases, in the context that most DBAs have to deal with space management and fragmentation issues," says Elvin.
He explains that there are best practices published that address certain forms of fragmentation, reducing the overhead of disorganised data.
"However, these best practices are not yet universally adopted. With the introduction of Oracle 9i, there is some capability for online reorganisation of data, which may assist in reducing the fragmentation overhead."
This session looks at the fundamental causes of different types of fragmentation and assesses the impact of each. It also demonstrates how addressing one type of fragmentation may induce another type to occur, and that solving a fragmentation issue is often a compromise.
The conference will feature, among others, presentations by Gavin Soorma, database support controller at Emirates Airline in Dubai, UAE, who will discuss "Oracle Collaboration Suite: Concepts and Configuration", and Brent Moore of Old Mutual. His presentation, titled "Managing large scale implementation - a hitchhikers guide to success" will provide invaluable insight into the complex and demanding process of enterprise Oracle deployments.
Endorsing its support of the SAOUG, Sue Harper of Oracle Corporation UK is presenting an overview of Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Application Development with Oracle 9i JDeveloper.
"The annual SAOUG conference is the premier event for Oracle users to gain insight into the solutions and technologies available for business from many perspectives - from vendors, users and Oracle itself. We are putting together an agenda that will make it imperative for every Oracle user - from the CIO to the DBA - to attend to allow them to understand and address real-life issues faced by Oracle customers," concludes Roestorf.

The SAOUG incorporates Technology and Applications users and is the only Oracle user group in the nation that has been officially acknowledged by Oracle SA.
