SAP drives in-memory analytics with Hana

Johannesburg, 14 Nov 2011

Global business software solutions company, SAP has unveiled an in-memory, high-performance analytic appliance, called Hana.

According to SAP, Hana can analyse massive amounts of up to 360 times faster than traditional databases, which enables organisations to instantly analyse information from virtually any data source, in real-time.

Data is captured in-memory, and external data can be added to analytic models to expand analysis across an entire organisation. This includes structured, unstructured and event information.

Vishal Sikka, SAP executive board member and head of technology and innovation, said technology can reduce the time taken to process complex data queries from hours to just a few seconds. He demonstrated how a Hana-based application, used by a large Japanese retailer, managed to process information up to 100 000 times faster than traditional systems.

“Hana is the future for SAP. Over the next few years, there will be a consolidation of ERP systems, applications and the data warehouse. We will start to see new applications being consumed in ways never thought possible.

“With Hana, we believe there will be tremendous simplification of the IT landscape. Hana is about being able to ask complex questions and access large amounts of data, and many different types of data, in real-time, with fast response time, and without pre-fabrication,” explained Sikka.

He added that the technology empowers end-users to enable them to process and analyse information at much faster speeds, and to “carry the enterprise with them, on their mobile device, in real-time”.

Gartner predicts that, on average, enterprise data will grow by 650% over the next five years. According to the research firm, costs to administer, and maintain multiple data marts, warehouses and transactional systems are soaring, while IT budgets are being slashed.
