Enterprise software firm SAP has announced immediate support for the launch of Apple's latest operating system (OS), iOS 8, and devices - including the newly launched iPhone 6.
Set to be made available as a free download on 17 September, iOS 8 is compatible with iPad and the iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, and 5S. The new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus - launching in a number of international countries on 19 September - ship with the new OS.
SAP says it will support customers running the latest mobile OS and device from Apple with SAP Mobile Platform, SAP Mobile Secure portfolio and mobile apps from SAP.
"Many of the new enterprise features within iOS 8 can benefit SAP customers eager to adopt corporate security requirements such as single sign-on, per-app virtual private network and app configuration."
SAP has validated iOS 8 for apps running on SAP Mobile Platform and plans to further enhance support with upcoming releases of the software development kit for SAP Mobile Platform. The new application programming interface, says SAP, is available for consuming online and offline data, and will be compatible with Swift programming language for developing mobile applications.
SAP has extensive Apple deployments for enterprise, supporting more than 66 600 iPhones and iPads for its employees worldwide.
Rick Costanzo, executive VP and GM of global mobility solutions at SAP, says the firm is aware most enterprises need to support multiple operating systems, particularly in a bring-your-own-device environment. "Our customers can protect and manage their data, apps, devices and users on all mobile platforms."
The SAP Mobile Secure portfolio will support all of the company's devices as well as employees' own devices, he notes. "A top concern with deploying new devices is security, so it is imperative that our complete mobile portfolio is ready for the new iOS 8 on day one."
