Business software company SAP has donated R1 million to the Nelson Mandela foundation as part of its ongoing partnership.
The company says the donation was specifically for the ninth Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture this year, which was held this month at the Linder Auditorium, at the Johannesburg College of Education.
This year's lecture was delivered by Ismail Serageldin, director of the Library of Alexandria, in Egypt. He addressed issues around diversity, cohesion and social justice.
“This year's lecture was attended by several Cabinet ministers, captains of industry, leaders from multilateral organisations, and the non-profit sector,” according to SAP.
Previous speakers at the lecture include Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai, former secretary-general of the United Nations Kofi Annan, and retired archbishop Desmond Tutu.
This lecture forms the basis of the foundation's Dialogue and Annual Lecture Programme, which was initiated to highlight the crucial role of dialogue in promoting understanding and generating solutions to the challenges of social development.
“The event offers leading international figures the opportunity to present their views on major issues in social development,” says the company.
It has been involved with the foundation for the past eight years.
