Enterprise software firm, SAP has opened an app store to enable customers to purchase business intelligence (BI) apps for a mobile device.
The SAP Store, which is currently in beta, is comprised of a mixture of SAP business applications and third-party SAP partner apps, designed for mobile workers in multiple industries.
The apps can be accessed via any smartphone or tablet device that has iOS, BlackBerry and Android operating systems. SAP says 80% of its applications will be driven by its partners.
The apps store currently has more than 50 SAP-certified applications from partners that focus on BI, analytics, sales, productivity and human capital management. According to SAP, there are also apps targeted at healthcare workers, logistics and government.
According to SAP, developers will get 85% of the app revenue, with SAP taking the remaining 15%.
Paul Webel, SAP Africa GM, says SAP's medium- to long-term strategy is to allow users to consume its applications on multiple devices. He says SAP is targeting the mobile market with its existing and future applications.
“As global business evolves, the way our customer consumes and interacts with our applications changes and SAP believes very strongly that in time, more mobile device users will need to manage their businesses via these devices.”
Webel adds that the global software consumption model has changed because consumers are changing the way they purchase software. This trend is also expected to be driven by the consumerisation of IT and how consumers are accessing their business data via their consumer devices.
He says the benefit for SAP is that its customers can purchase SAP applications 27/7 365 days a year, and will not be restricted to standard business operating hours and payment methods.
“It aligns perfectly with and empowers SAP mobile and cloud strategies by offering flexible anytime, anywhere access to our applications from any device,” adds Webel.
