The SA Revenue (SARS) has issued a tender for proposals on ways to standardise its servers, saying it is investigating "consolidating servers to increase efficiency and cost-saving on procurement, maintenance and support".

The server ecosystem in SARS currently consists of a conglomerate of Intel-based Compaq ProLiant servers in various locations, hosting a number of solutions.

Systems thinking

SARS' systems management ranges from IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for backup from SQL, Exchange and OpenVMS, Disk Extender and a number of storage solutions not currently in use. management software in use includes HP OpenView, including ManageX SMART, and OpenVMS Robomon.

SARS also has a variety of SAS solutions for graphical communication, statistics or management science; Perfman (performance management) for OS/390; DemandTech, a Windows systems management solution; Candle Omegamon for mainframe monitoring; and a number of BMC solutions around process management and tape library management.

Other solutions in this space include data replication, monitoring and reports from Softek, Applix contact centre software and security analysers from WebSpy.

Skill up

Skills required by SARS include server hardware, cabling, voice equipment, Microsoft MCP 2000/2003, MCSRE 2000/2003, Open VMS, OS/2, Unix, DOS as well as networking equipment and protocols and SARS internal applications.

The closing date for applications is 17 November. Tender documentation can be found on the site. A compulsory information session will take place on 22 September.
