Transformation in the telecoms industry has led to numerous traditional legacy private branch exchange (PBX) vendors battling to keep up with the changing technology and shrinking margins.

This is the view of Far South Networks directors Grant Broomhall and Michael Walton, and comes as the company enters the PBX and voice over IP () arena with the release of the Com.X1 PBX solution, both designed and manufactured in SA.

According to Broomhall, the solution was designed around SA's unique environment, incorporating features such as hardware echo cancellation to counter echo on the telco lines. The device also features power surge protections to help protect the device against lightening strikes.

Broomhall says the Com.X1 also has prospects internationally due to its hardware and software innovations and designs.

He adds that companies can now make use of advanced features that aren't typical in traditional PBX systems. “Auto attendant, call recording, and voicemail-to-e-mail are becoming standard without the need to pay for expensive licence upgrades.”

Broomhall notes that the Com.X1 can be configured and managed through a simple Web interface. “This allows the PBX to be set up in minutes. Due to the IP nature of the Com.X1, setting up VOIP trunks on the PBX is simple. “

Adrian Bush, MD of Even Flow , says technologies like the Com.X1 are effective solutions in the small to medium enterprise (SME) business sector. “Feature-rich solutions that can be easily managed without having to fork out an excessive amount of cash are wanted by SMEs.”
