SAS Institute extends the potential of data warehousing to business managers

By SAS Institute
Johannesburg, 16 Jul 1998

SAS Institute, the world`s largest privately held software vendor, has announced an enhanced data warehousing solution centred on SAS/Warehouse Administrator software, release 1.3.

This enhanced solution extends the use of metadata and responds to the dynamic demands arising from business solutions such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Customer data originating in ERP systems now can be delivered to a CRM initiative through the data warehouse.

Metadata management, through SAS/Warehouse Administrator software, release 1.3, allows IT professionals to visualise and control the process of converting data into usable business information.

Metadata is defined in terms that business users understand, and makes it easier for business analysts to navigate through the warehouse, understand the origins and nature of data in the warehouse, and select appropriate tables to query against.

The new release of SAS/Warehouse Administrator also provides a process library-a set of transformation routines that can be used to populate the process information, and is now delivered via the Web.

Franc Trivella, Marketing Manager for SAS Institute (Pty) Limited, says, "current business issues that drive data warehousing projects include the need for better information and data quality, support for organisational change, and the need to increase end-user productivity."

"Business users rate the greatest obstacles to data warehousing success as:

poor data quality, failure to manage end-user expectations, inability to access legacy data, as well as inconsistent or non-existent business rule analysis and business data modelling.

"Clearly, more than a simple tool is needed for data warehousing success."

SAS/Warehouse Administrator software, release 1.3, represents a strong business-solution-focused data warehousing solution from SAS Institute. It includes a partnership with Logic Works for technology integration, and new software technologies from SAS Institute including: MetaSpace Explorer, SAS/ACCESS interface for R/3, Scalable Performance Data Server 2.0, and an enhanced service program.

  • The Logic Works tool allows users to model in ERwin and have those models populate the metadata managed by SAS/Warehouse Administrator software.
  • Metaspace Explorer is a powerful and flexible tool that helps you locate and view business information without having to know about the structure of the data warehouse. Metaspace Explorer is a Java applet that allows users to browse information contained in a data warehouse.
  • SAS Institute announced a world-wide direction and a series of intelligent data warehouse solutions to enable business analysts, first at SAP AG R/3 (using SAS/ACCESS interface for R/3) user sites, to leverage their organisation`s enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications.
  • SAS Institute`s Scalable Performance Data Server, release 2.0, is a data server that is optimised for data warehousing and decision support applications. It provides industrial strength speed and power, without the overhead normally tied to most relational databases.
